For daring to bring their phones to school, these students were punished this way.

I think two wrongs will never make a right.The students might have violated schools rules by flaunting their phones, asking them to maliciously destroyed it is uncalled for.

 There would be nothing wrong in meting out corporal punishment to erring students rather taking this ignoble route.
